The reins of America's hearts and minds are changing hands, as they do annually. TV seasons end with harrowing finales as the summer box office warms up with big action blockbusters, all-star comedies, and new and more dazzling animated features.
Get ready to leave the house and smuggle some Jujubes into your local theater. Summer movie time is here!
June is a great month to be a moviegoer. We've got comic book characters coming to life on the screen, albeit some of the less traditional fare. You won't see anyone flying around in a cape in Jonah Hex, but you will see that hot chick from the Transformers movies walking around in a dress with a bustle. More entertaining, though, will be Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin in his turn as a scarred vigilante out to fill some old pals full of lead.
It'll be interesting to see how the filmmakers balance the gritty realism with the marginally fantastic world that defines the original stories. Personally, I think they'll fall flat on their faces. However, seeing as this is directed by the same guy that brought us the hyper-realistic film noir gem Horton Hears a Who, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Besides, it's got Will Arnett and the classically trained John Malkovich. What could go wrong?
Seriously, though, the Hex director, Jimmy Hayward, has worked on some popular Pixar movies, and that's one studio that keeps hitting home run after home run. This summer brings another entry in the only franchise for which it's ever made a sequel.
Toy Story 3 is not only a shoe-in for best animated feature at next year's Oscar ceremony, but it stands to make Disney and Pixar a lot of money via your local toy store. Oh, and it'll probably be a pretty good movie. All this despite the lack of an ironic sex scene between the anatomically incorrect Ken and Barbie.
One June movie that you should check out, and not just for cameo appearances by stars of the original television show Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz, is The A-Team.
I know I talked about it before, but as stalwart leader Hannibal would say: I love it when a plan comes together. And if I were a dessert chef, I would say that I love it when a flan comes together. If I were a member of a large Scottish family, I'd say that I love it when a clan comes together. (OK, one more.) If I were an IT guy setting up a local area network, I'd say, "I love it when a LAN comes together."
But see the movie. There will probably be fewer puns than in that paragraph.
Whether you see it as a blessing or a curse, vampires abound in this day and age. And none are more widely recognized, for good or ill, than the custom-breaking, daylight-loving, appreciated-far-too-much-by-fourteen-year-old-girls vamps from the Twilight saga.
Eclipse is set to open at the end of the month. Yes, I totally realize that the previous movie just came out late last year, but the idea is to strike while the iron is hot, and still guaranteed to have a $100 million-plus opening weekend.
After setting records in November for box office opening and in March for best-selling DVD ever, can you think of a reason why you wouldn't follow up New Moon as quickly as possible? I mean, aside from the fact that it costs you a little bit of your soul to do so?
By the way, rumor has it they're filming scenes from the next film, Breaking Dawn, here in town. If you happen to see Kellan Lutz hanging around your local bookstore, don't panic and run up to him, screaming for an autograph and ripping at his clothes. He's just a normal guy trying to make his way through the world.
And if you have no idea who Kellan Lutz is despite the fact that you know I'm talking about Twilight movies, good. You're normal.
Enjoy this crazy summer ride, folks. There'll never be another 2010. Treasure these moments.
I have to work on my list of top five Hollywood babes. I'm sure I'll be thinking about at least one of them tonight as I ease my way into dreamland.
