It appears that the sheriff of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, thinks he’s the chief law enforcement officer of Lebanon, the country. On September 20, Sheriff Michael DeLeo revoked 30-year-old Meleanie Hain’s concealed-weapons permit after receiving complaints that she wore a holstered pistol to her 5-year-old daughter’s soccer game nine days earlier.
DeLeo claimed he revoked Hain’s permit because she showed poor judgment. He insisted that his decision was based on a state law that prohibits such permits from being given to people whose character and reputation make them a danger to public safety.
How ironic he would say that since he’s the one who showed poor judgment by revoking Hain’s permit in the first place while displaying complete disregard for the Second Amendment. Lebanon County Judge Robert Eby essentially concurred with that assessment and reinstated Hain’s permit on October 14.
Unfortunately, DeLeo created for Hain and her family numerous problems that can only be solved in court. That’s why she’s filed a federal lawsuit against the sheriff.
The suit alleges that, in addition to violating her Constitutional rights, DeLeo prosecuted Hain maliciously by revoking her permit. Hain’s attorney, Matthew Weisberg, said, “She has become a pariah in her small community.”
“I fought for my right, and now I’m still being punished,” Hain said. Just because she won in a court of law, that doesn’t mean she’s not a loser in the court of public opinion.
In addition to money for attorney fees incurred by appealing DeLeo’s revocation of Hain’s permit, Weisberg said the lawsuit seeks damages for Hain’s “pain and suffering.” He also said Hain and her children have been harassed and ostracized by their neighbors because of DeLeo’s actions.
In one instance, Hain said a person from her neighborhood who spotted her in a local store had the manager ask her to leave because she was carrying a handgun. That bitch better watch out she doesn’t get a cap in her ass.
Hain also said her babysitting service has suffered from the sheriff’s actions. For some reason, people expect babysitters to look after their little heathens without a reasonable means of defending themselves against them. Go figure.
While some may question the wisdom of openly carrying a pistol to soccer games, Hain said she’s done it before without incident. Besides, soccer games in Europe are famous for fights and riots. It’s not a matter of if but when that trend spills over into American soccer pitches, and when it does, Hain will be armed to defend both herself and her child from drunken, Molotov-cocktail-tossing hooligans.
