Even though June is the month to honor fathers, we’ve chosen a
worthy mom as this issue’s Hero. In fact, she’s such a fantastically awesome
mother, a group paid tribute to her maternal prowess by endowing her with its
inaugural “Top Mom” award just days before Mother’s Day.
Mingling Moms, a networking group for Long Island mothers,
bestowed the honor upon Dina Lohan at its “Girls’ Night Out” in Farmington, New
York. Lohan is the incredibly nurturing mother of the multitalented superstar
Lindsay Lohan.
The charity organization celebrated Lohan and the mothers of other
famous Long Islanders, such as Alec Baldwin, Natalie Portman, and Mariah Carey.
Lohan, however, took back home to Merrick, NY the honor of “Top Mom” for her
“behind-the-scenes” contributions to Lindsay’s “tremendous career.”
What’s the ex-Rockette’s secret to her superlative motherly
abilities? The 45-year-old Lohan, who still possesses much of her youthful
allure, has said that she considers herself more like a “sister” to Lindsay and
enjoys club-hopping in her Jimmy Choo boots. Additionally, with her long,
layered, blond locks and heavy black eyeliner, she apparently tries to
reinforce that sisterly connection by trying to look like Lindsay’s sibling as
much as humanly possible.
Lohan is also a veritable font of sage advice. When questioned why
her wealthy daughter doesn’t simply hire a driver to take her to various
parties rather than drinking and driving, Long Island’s “Top Mom” said, “It’s
not my place to tell her she’s only allowed to go out and drive with a driver
or whatever.”
When it comes to Lindsay’s missteps, Mother Lohan offers her child
a simple maxim. (Coincidentally, Lindsay graced the cover of Maxim magazine last August.) “I mean
she’s obviously made mistakes,” Dina Lohan once explained to Vanity Fair. “I just tell her she should
stay true to herself and try to make up for what she did.” Those 84 minutes
Lindsay spent in jail prove that she’s taken to heart her mom’s counsel about
repentance.
Lohan not only instructs in word, but in deed, as well. She’s
living proof that a strong woman need not revert to her maiden name following a
famously bitter divorce simply to prove her independence. If a divorcee’s louse
of an ex happened to give her a married name that’s beneficial, Ms. Lohan
demonstrates to her daughters that she should keep it and use it to further her
career. Miley Cyrus may sing “The Best of Both Worlds,” but Dina is living it.
Now, the matriarch of the Lohan clan is providing for the rest of
us a glimpse at her maternal methodology. E! Entertainment Television debuted
the eight-episode reality series Living
Lohan just weeks after Lohan garnered her “Top Mom” award.
Finally, someone is putting “real” back in reality TV. “This isn’t
going to be like The Hills,” Lohan
said about the new show. “It’s going to be real. It’s going to showcase how I
do what I do. It’ll really show who we are in a way that’s very honest.”
The show focuses on Lohan’s efforts to help her other daughter,
14-year-old Ali, get her Hollywood career off and running. Thanks be to God
that Dina Lohan is so generously exposing her life in such a manner, thus
providing the rest of the world a firsthand look at the exceptional parenting
skills that made Lindsay one of this country’s biggest stars as she tirelessly
works to do the same for Ali.
After one episode, it seems that Ali is well on her way to
following in her big sister’s drunkenly meandering, yet fame-filled, footsteps.
“Lindsay’s my role model,” is a line oft repeated by Ali.
Take a bow, Dina. You’ve earned it.
