Metahophosis
The Poet's BoxBy Mr. E. Bates
The alchemical player said,
“I will render gold from lead!”
Thus quite a fool was seen to be,
For seeking (Au) from (Pb).

Throughout the land, the story’s told,
That all that glitters isn’t gold.
No magic pimp can make a ho,
From one who answers always no.

Or formulate love’s recipe
And make a bond not meant to be.
But let them have a laugh on me.
I’ll try again with mercury (Hg).

end

Mr. E. Bates is a poet who likens the quest for love to a foxhunt, in which it is the chase and not the kill that appeals.
